I’ve been playing around with tapestry crochet quite a bit lately, and somewhere between designing tiny pixel graphs and asking myself “Okay, but what else can I do with these?” I landed on an idea I’m ridiculously excited about:
A mystery tapestry crochet-along!
If you’ve never participated in a crochet-along, or CAL, before, the idea is pretty simple. Instead of getting the entire pattern at once, we’ll work through it together over a set period of time.
I can tell you that this is a 32 × 32 tapestry crochet graph worked over four weeks.
Each week, I’ll release the next eight rows of the graph:
- Week 1: Rows 1–8
- Week 2: Rows 9–16
- Week 3: Rows 17–24
- Week 4: Rows 25–32 and the final reveal!
As you crochet each section, more of the picture will slowly begin to appear. You might figure it out immediately. You might spend two weeks confidently insisting it’s something completely different. Either way, I want to hear your guesses.
This Is Tapestry Crochet, Not C2C
Mystery graphs and crochet-alongs are often associated with corner-to-corner crochet, but I wanted to put my own spin on the idea. So this CAL is worked using tapestry crochet. Each square on the graph represents one stitch, and you’ll work back and forth across the graph while changing colors to create the image. If tapestry crochet is already your thing, you should be able to jump right in.
If you’ve been wanting to try tapestry crochet but haven’t known where to start, this is also a relatively small project to experiment with.
What You’ll Need
The complete design uses six colors.
I’ll provide the exact color information with the first graph release, along with the yarn weight, hook size, gauge information and any other details you’ll need before we begin. You absolutely do not have to use the exact yarn or colors that I use, either.
Raid your stash. Pick your own palette. Make it pastel. Make it gothic. Make choices I would never have thought of. As long as you have enough contrast between the colors for the design to show clearly, have fun with it.
How the CAL Will Work
Every week, I’ll publish the next section of the graph here on Ponkie’s Creations. You can start when the CAL begins or join us later and catch up at your own pace. There’s no crochet police hiding behind the yarn shelf. This is supposed to be fun.
I’ll also be sharing my progress, and I would love to see yours. Post your work as we go, share your theories about what we’re making, compare color choices and see if you can solve the mystery before the final rows are released.
Just try not to spoil it for everyone if you somehow become a tiny crochet detective and crack the design early.
